Community Housing Network Converting Garfield School in Sault Ste. Marie to Apartments
By: Jim LeHocky, June 29, 2022
A shuttered school building in Sault Ste. Marie will be converted into apartments.
The Garfield School located on Spruce street opened in the 1890’s and closed in the early 70’s. The entire property will have 36 apartments on it for low and moderate income tenants. Community Housing Network from southeast lower Michigan is investing just over $3 million into the project.
Over the past couple of years, the network has been looking specifically in the Soo for an opportunity to build housing.
The outside of the school will maintain much of its historic appeal.
“Late 1800’s elementary school. It’s one of our last historic schools from that era. As a community asset, I think it’s important that we do not see that fall to the wrecking ball,” said Kelly Freeman, the Community Development Director.
Freeman says work should start on the project within a couple of months.
